The balance shifts by workload, but these are the levers — and how we think about each.

Processor

Core count for rendering, compiling, and simulation; single-thread speed for CAD and many creative apps. We pick the platform that fits how your software actually scales.

Memory

32 GB is a floor; 64–128 GB+ for heavy 3D, video, and data work. ECC memory is available where the platform supports it, for jobs where data integrity matters.

Graphics

VRAM and compute drive acceleration in most pro apps. A high-VRAM gaming card is the value pick; a professional card earns it on certified drivers and capacity.

Storage

A fast NVMe drive for the OS and active projects, big capacity for libraries, and — when throughput is critical — multiple drives configured for speed.

Workstation questions

What PC do I need for video editing, 3D, or CAD?
It depends on the software. Video (Premiere, Resolve) rewards a strong CPU, a high-VRAM GPU, and fast scratch storage. 3D and rendering (Blender, Maya, C4D) scale with CPU cores or GPU render power and love RAM. CAD (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Revit) leans on single-thread speed and, for some apps, certified pro GPU drivers. We size the build to the exact tools you run — not sure where to start?
How much RAM does a workstation need?
32 GB is a comfortable floor for most creative work. Heavy 3D scenes, large video timelines, big datasets, and AI work want 64 GB or more, and serious memory-bound jobs can use 128 GB and up. ECC memory is available on platforms that support it, for data integrity.
Do I need a workstation GPU, or will a gaming card work?
For most creative work — video, rendering, AI — a high-VRAM gaming RTX card delivers excellent performance per dollar. Professional (RTX Pro) cards earn their premium where you need certified drivers for CAD and simulation, extra VRAM, or GPU ECC. We'll tell you honestly which one your workload actually calls for.

We ship hand-built workstations across the US from our shop in Fairport, NY, with local pickup available. Every build includes a 3-year warranty and lifetime tech support, and you talk to the person who built and validated your machine.
